Positive Results That Mean The Whole City Wins

I was reading an article today from The New York Times that brought good news about a program for people with diabetes in the town of Asheville. The article explains:

“In the last 10 years, the city of Asheville has given free diabetes medicines and supplies to municipal workers who have the condition if they agree to monthly counseling from specially trained pharmacists. The results, city officials say, have been dramatic: Within months of enrolling in the program, almost twice as many have their blood sugar levels under control.”

The good news is that not only has the program helped the people involved, it’s also meant that for every dollar spent on the program, the city has saved $4 on things such as dialysis and emergency hospital visits. That means the whole city wins, because the money saved can be spent on providing better health care services.

We’d love to hear about any programs available in your town or city, so please leave us a comment below.

Nosy Families and Gestational Diabetes

My sister was recently married, which meant that Christmas this year brought with it the dreaded, nagging question from the relatives “so, when do you think you’ll start a family?”

I had to laugh as she did her best to assure our aunt that for her, children are still a few years off :)

All the talk of babies got me thinking about gestational diabetes, so today over lunch I was having a browse around the net for interesting articles about the condition.

I thought I’d share just a snippet from an article about testing for gestational diabetes, because I felt it covered some good points about what to expect.

“Your doctor will most likely have you take what is called the glucose challenge test. What happens is that you’ll be given a special glucose solution to drink when you come in for your appointment. It is simply an extra sweet solution that sort of tastes like a soft drink.

Next, you’ll wait for an hour and the doctor will draw a blood sample from your arm. The results will be known within a day or two.”

The Origins Of “Diabetes Mellitus”

During the holiday break I’ve been doing some diabetes research and I thought I’d share some of my findings about the meaning of the name “Diabetes Mellitus”.

The word Diabetes comes from the Greek word diabētēs, which means siphon, or passing through. When Diabetes was first recognised, the most common symptom was frequent urination, or urine passing though the body.

The term Mellitus, from the Latin word mel, meaning honey, was added when it was noted that urine from people with diabetes smelled sweet, because there was more sugar in it.

…So that’s my fast fact for the day. Hope you’re enjoying the holidays :)

Manufactured Insulin Is Identical To Human Insulin

  • Insulin cannot be taken by mouth because it is a protein and would be digested
  • Insulin is given by injection beneath the skin where the insulin is absorbed over a period of time
  • Clear insulin acts quickly for a short period of time
  • Cloudy insulin has chemicals with it that slow down the insulin and make it last longer
  • Everyone is different and will need different mixtures of clear and cloudy insulin and different numbers of injections each day
  • Insulin is now manufactured and is identical to human insulin.

Storage of insulin:

  • The bottle in use can be stored in a cool spot in a room. Bottles not in use should be stored, on their sides, in a refrigerator, but not in the freezer. Check expiry date and appearance before using
  • Insulin is destroyed by heat and so must not be left in a car or anywhere where temperatures exceed 40 degrees centigrade.

Adjusting the dose:
Some people are reluctant to change their daily dose of insulin without consulting a doctor or nurse, but there are situations in which it may be necessary to do so.
For instance, there could be a change of diet or increase in activity at work. You may have a minor infection or be under stress.

The menstrual cycle may also affect diabetic control, and it is not unusual for women to need different doses of insulin before, during and after periods.

Ideally, the insulin dose should be tailored to match regular test results, as measurements of blood glucose levels are the best guides to proper control. This is why it is so important to record the results of your blood glucose tests. If you have this information, you can use it to make the right decision at the right time.
